The roots of today’s credit industry date back to the end of the last century.  At that time, two associations were formed that continue to serve the business community.  In 1895, the Commercial Law League of America was established by attorneys, collection agencies and publishers of legal directories.  Later, judges, law school professors and students joined the organization too.  In 1896, the National Association of Credit Management was formed by those handling the granting of credit and collection of commercial debt at companies all over the country.  Their long tradition carries on today as a national organization which is comprised of vibrant local affiliates.  Credit bureaus began around the middle of the 19th century as a way to for local merchants to evaluate the credit worthiness of potential customers.  The number and size grew with the economic boom of the 1920’s.  The oldest of the three main credit reporting services still in existence today was founded in 1898.

Today, the industry has continued to evolve and grow.  New companies and associations have joined the industry, like the International Association of Commercial Collectors.  Credit professionals from all sides of any business transaction involving the granting of credit now provide the economy with the vital tools and services to keep the engines of business turning such as:

Making available ways to investigate the credit worthiness of a prospect
Offering continuing education to improve their job performance
Elevating the standards of professionalism for all
Presenting new and innovative options to manage accounts receivable
Affording credit grantors a source to resolve stubborn collection matters
